Jordaan

Description

map_jordaan_flatgenie

One of the most in-demand locations, Jordaan is Amsterdam’s beautiful area to the west side of the ‘Grachtengordel’ (main canals). Home to 20,000 residents, it holds a variety of old-fashioned homes alongside modern family accommodations. Jordaan is a bohemian mixture of artists, yuppies, expats, and a core of working-class locals. Its an ideal location for both young students and young entrepreneurs who love Amsterdam’s beautiful and historic ambiance, along with the flair of beautiful canals and quirky, narrow streets. Prices are high and the accommodation benefit value is poor due to the high prices that have exploded during the last few years.

Nevertheless, Jordaan offers dozens of bars, some Amsterdam’s most famous coffee shops, art galleries, restaurants and shops, with the charm of living right in the middle of Amsterdam. Everything is within walking and biking distance such as Central Station, the Dam, or the popular Leidseplein, where most of the bars and clubs are located. You can find something interesting on almost every corner. In summertime, lively areas and side-streets that run south of Westerstraat have many of the city’s more highly regarded restaurants, many with outdoor seating near the canals.

De Plantage

Description

plantage_map_flatgeniePlantage is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city and was integrated into the center of Amsterdam in 1663. Buildings from the 19th century are predominant in this area along with many restaurants and cafés. Is not a cheap area to live though, due to the fact flats here are much bigger in comparison to other areas in Amsterdam. The key attraction here is the Artis Zoo, the oldest in The Netherlands also one of the biggest in Europe. The 1683 dated herb garden Hortus Botanicus and Wetheimpark are the neighbourhood’s only green areas, with the latter offering as a lovely spot for canalside lounging.
